Thoughts on Polaroids

Images captured on Polaroid film are one of a kind. There are no two pictures that 

come out exactly the same. Surprises happen all the time, there’s an 

unpredictability to the media and a control that artist have surrender to the process. 

The actual photographs exist in the real world, instead for pixels on a screen on a 

phone or hard drive that no one sees. Even when the photos don’t turn out exactly 

the way you expect them, they can still exude emotion and mood. In the light leaks, 

uneven processing, dust spots, out of focus patches, and scratches of the roller when 

the film is ejected from the camera, there is a haunting quality in the images. 

Gold and Silver Paint

Kintsugi is a Japanese word that poetically translates to “Golden Joinery” and is 

traditionally used in pottery to repair broken pieces with metallic gold or silver 

making the seam more beautiful instead of trying to hid the cracks by trying to make 

them invisible. I used this theory for repairing the rips and cracks that happened 

during the emulsion lift process. I find this concept very inspiring. Our cracks and 

scars should not be a source of shame. Our broken pieces make us into better people, 

giving us compassion and empathy for others.

Embroidery 

Sewing is a metaphor for self-healing and transformation. I had the scans of the 

Polaroid transfers enlarged and printed on canvas specifically to be able to sew into 

the photographs. The embroidery connects the pieces of the photography to the gold 

and silver paint and acts as a graphic element that ties the image to the canvas, 

metaphorically and literally.

ポラロイドについての考察

ポラロイドフィルムで撮影されたイメージは、一枚一枚が唯一無二の存在であり、まっ

たく同じ写真は二度と生まれない。そこには常に予測できない要素があり、作家はその

プロセスに対するコントロールの一部を手放すことになる。写真は、スマートフォンや

ハードドライブ内のピクセルではなく、現実の中に物質として存在する。たとえ期待ど

おりに写らなかったとしても、そこには感情や雰囲気が宿る。光漏れ、現像のムラ、ピ

ントのずれ、フィルム排出時の擦れなどが重なり合い、イメージにはどこか不穏で余韻

を残すような気配が生まれる。

金銀彩について

「金継ぎ」は、日本の伝統技法であり、割れや欠けを金や銀で修復し、それを隠すので

はなく美として際立たせるものである。本作では、ポラロイド転写の過程で生じた裂け

や亀裂を、この考え方に基づいて修復している。私はこの思想に強く惹かれている。傷

や痕跡は恥ずべきものではなく、人をより深く、他者への思いやりや共感を持つ存在へ

と変えていくものである。

刺繍について

縫うという行為は、自己修復と変容のメタファーである。本作では、ポラロイド転写の

スキャン画像を拡大し、キャンバスにプリントした上で刺繍を施している。刺繍は写真

の断片をつなぎ、金銀の修復部分と結びつけると同時に、視覚的要素としてイメージと

支持体であるキャンバスを、物理的にも概念的にも結びつけている。
